Discouraged with Diabetes?

Studies show that attitude and mindset strongly influence your confidence in managing your health and achieving health goals. Positive affirmations, positive self-talk, is a simple strategy to overcome discouragement and doubt. It may seem weird at first, but if you stick with it, there are benefits to gain.

If you are feeling discouraged, or just want to learn a new way to build confidence and motivation, practice these tips.

Identify Self-doubt, or negative self-talk, and make it positive.

All or nothing

Example
I didn’t walk every day last week. I’m an exercise failure.

Positive alternative
I walked 4 out of 7 days last week; some exercise is always better than none.

Over-generalizing

Example
I can’t run, so I can’t get enough exercise to do me any good.

Positive alternative
Walking is one of the best forms of exercise I can do and I am capable of doing more of it.

Negative interpretation

Example
My doctor wants me to have a foot evaluation before I start doing more activity. That must mean exercise is bad for my feet.

Positive alternative
Because I have diabetes, I always have to take good care of my feet. I’m glad that my doctor is making sure that the activity I do is right for me.

Personalization

Example
The weatherman has something against me. I was planning to walk, but it has been raining cats and dogs all day long. I just can’t win.

Positive alternative
You can never really predict the weather, so I’m glad I have a plan for doing exercise indoors on rainy days like today.

Once you switch your mindset, focus on building motivation with these tips:

Find an exercise buddy

Do activities you enjoy to always stay active – this includes watching your favorite tv show while walking on the treadmill.

Mix up your routine
