Step it Up: How to Challenge Yourself

One of the keys to reaching your health goals is to get your body moving. For some, that may mean a nice long walk after work. For others, that may mean squeezing in a few quick, simple movements when you can. Whatever your daily activity goal, it’s important to listen to your body and know when you can push yourself to do more.  Check out these 4 easy ways to step up your activity and overall health!

  1. Take a New Route

If you walk the same route each day, consider switching it up.  Take a different path that might have a few more hills or take an extra 5 minutes to finish.

2. Stretch!

In addition to helping you get a better night’s sleep, gentle stretching can help improve circulation and relieve muscle tension. Try a few yoga moves for beginners or search YouTube for things like “5 Minute Gentle Leg Stretches” or “3 Easy Stretches for Lower Back.”

When it comes to activity, changing up your routine can have a huge impact! You use different muscles for different types of movement, so mix in something new from time to time. You can try:

Remember, mental health is just as important as physical health.  A relaxed mind results in less stress, reduced muscle tension, and improved sleep quality.  Not sure where to start? Here are some ideas:

  • Meditate – It’s simple! Close your eyes and focus all your attention on your breath for 1 minute
  • Listen to Music – Your favorite song can boost your mood and reduce stress – so turn it up!
  • Read a Book– Dive into a good story and let your mind wander through the pages.
